Statement Of Intent

Statement of Intent – Tess Bocking

Section 1 – Progress And Achievement:

I feel that throughout the Exploratory and Pathway stages, I have developed myself as a designer. I have learnt new skills and how to adapt them to fit the needs of my projects. I have learnt a lot more about artists and designers, and much more about the subject of graphic design. I've become more aware of my creative process, and have developed it during my time at Chesterfield College. I've started to experiment a lot more during my projects, and have found that I like discovering new effects, with different media and Photoshop.

Section 2 – Pathway Choice:
From an early age, I have known that art is the subject I am most passionate about. However, I was uncertain as to which area of art I wanted to continue studying further. This is why I chose to complete this course at Chesterfield College. Since beginning here, my eyes have been opened to all the artistic possibilities. I started to realise what i enjoy doing the most within my art, and found that these things came under the title of graphic design. Since this realisation, I started noticing graphic design everywhere, and became more interested in learning about it, hence why i decided to choose it as my specialist area for the Pathway Stage. I hope to learn even more about this subject, particularly in the digital field, as I enjoy working digitally and want to be able to use all the tools at my disposal to create my best work. During the Personal Confirmatory Study, I hope to be able to use many of the new skills I have learnt during this course, and experiment further to develop my work.

Section 3 – Personal Confirmatory Study Aims And Objectives:

I have chosen to do my final project on the theme of 'Nostalgia' because I really like the positive side of this subject. I like the feeling when I look through old photographs, or find tokens from past occasions, and I like reminiscing about past events and feelings. I think there are many different areas that I can explore within this subject, from photographs and letters to past experiences and souvenirs, and I could even combine theses together to form montages. I intend to use some of my own resources, which would add a personal element to my project. However, I also plan to attend car boot sales, to find inspiration from other people's memories, and I could also take nostalgic tokens from my family and friends. I could take my own photographs and edit them using Photoshop to give them a nostalgic feel. However, I intend to use more than just photography during this project. I would like to experiment with my own drawings, using a variety of media, such as ink, charcoal, graphite and emulsion paint, as I think these media could work well to reflect the theme of nostalgia. For my final outcome I am expecting to produce more than one piece. I could perhaps create a montage and use it on stationery items, wrapping papers or calendars. I could also create a series of greetings cards to reflect upon this theme. I intend to start this project with an open mind, and see where research and experimentation takes me with my chosen theme of nostalgia.

Section 4 – Evaluation:
During this project, I expect my ideas to change and develop, and I intend to record these changes, perhaps in a sketchbook or a blog. This way, I will be able to show my work to others, and get their opinions on the directions they think I should take with my project. I intend to take their opinions
on board and refine my work appropriately. I hope that this project will allow me to freely experiment with my ideas, and help me to find out more about my own creative process. By developing and refining this process, I will be able to work more efficiently in future projects.
