I did this by painting an emulsion wash over the top of the photograph, which I think gives the image an even older feel to it, linking in with my theme of nostalgia. The wetness of the emulsion wash caused there to be some holes in the paper, which I think also adds to the apparent age of the image.
I did this using an emulsion wash to begin with, and then I drew over the basic outlines in the image using black felt tip pen, and wrote the phrase "something from one's childhood" which was taken from the spider diagram I completed at the start of the project. I like the outcome of this image because I think the faded out image together with the simple use of felt tip contrast well together giving the photograph an old and nostalgic feel, but adding the modern use of simple line drawings. For this image, I simply painted some brown ink over the top of the photograph. I don't think it works as well as some of the other images, but I think the addition of brown ink does make the photograph seem more aged.
To complete this image, firstly I added a thin layer of emulsion paint to fade out elements of the photograph. Once this had dried, I then traced over the outline of parts of the photograph in coloured felt tip pens. I like the overall simplistic effect of this image, but I think it would be better if the colours used were brighter and stood out more.
For this image, I just went over the outline of the people in the photograph using coloured felt tip pens. I don't think this works very well because the colours don't stand out very much, and I don't think it adds to the nostalgic feel of the photograph.
I did this image by painting a layer of emulsion paint onto the photograph, and then placing some newspaper over the top of it. When I took the newsaper away, some parts of it stuck to the photograph, making it seem more like a collage. I think this image works really well to promote my theme of nostalgia, but would have been better if the emulsion paint was a bit thinner so the photograph was slightly clearer.
To complete this image, i added a thin layer of emulsion wash to the photograph. I think it works well to bring out the highlights in the image, and even though the image is in colour, I think the fading of the colours and enhancing of the highlights does give this picture a feeling of nostalgia.
This image was completed in a similar way to some of the others. I added a thin layer of emulsion wash, and then traced over the top of the image using a black felt tip pen. At the top of the image, I took another quote from my spider diagram; "a wistful desire to return" and wrote that in felt tip. I think the tracing of the image works well with the emulsion paint, but the writing is difficult to make out, and I think it would have been better if this stood out more.
I left this picture as it was and decided just to use white emulsion paint to write a phrase from my original spider diagram; "a bitter-sweet longing". The emulsion paint stands out well against the greyscale background, but I think it could have worked better if I had done something to the background as well.
This picture was done just by flicking some brown and blue ink onto the photograph. I quite like the effect because I think it makes the photograph seem like it has aged a lot since it was developed, and I also like the addition of colour to the image. This image could also work well with some typography on it, if it was written in the right colour and style.
I completed this image by adding coloured felt tip pens to the areas of the photograph where I thought there would be colour if it wasn't in black and white. I think the addition of colour works well, but would have perhaps been better if I had used a different media to give the image colour. By using paint or even editing them on photoshop I could have made the colours brighter and more vivid.
For this image, I dabbed white emulsion paint onto the photograph, and then flicked blue and green ink onto the image. I like the overall effect of this image because I think the emulsion paint adds a touch of nostalgia to the piece, and the splashes of ink give an element of colour to the image which works well.
This image was completed, just by adding a layer of emulsion paint to the photograph. I originally intended to do more to the photograph, but after having added the emulsion, I thought it worked well simply like that. The emulsion paint gives the image a blurry effect, which makes it seem old and worn.
I didn't use any media on this photograph, but instead just screwed the photograph up and tore it around the edges. I like the effect of this image because the torn photograph makes it seem like it has been handled often and cherished, which I think is a strong part of nostalgia.
